Leibold Associates, Inc.
february 2010
Mid-February is a time of year when we’re all looking forward to warmer weather ahead. Here at Leibold Associates we’ve also been thinking about our past during this, our 50th Anniversary year. A lot has changed since 1960. The tools we use have completely changed, from waxed up art on boards to computers. Back in 1960, no one even thought about sustainability, now it’s becoming a major design consideration for more and more projects. See our article “6 ‘R’s of Sustainable Packaging” to read up on the many ways to make your next packaging project more green.

We also work differently with our clients than we use to. We’ve changed from a vendor fulfilling our clients’ needs one at a time, to partners working collaboratively to ensure each project produces the most effective, hardest working solution possible. Every so often, these efforts are recognized with an award. Recently we won 10 Graphic Design USA 2010 American Package Design Awards (see story and link below)!

As much as we like awards, what we really live for are accolades from our clients:

Now that’s good stuff!

In the end, our ability to adapt throughout the years, changing our tools, the way we work and consistently staying on top of the latest developments all goes back to the biggest thing that hasn’t changed - our desire to produce the highest quality and most creative work for our clients. And speaking of our clients, we wouldn’t have been here for 50 years without them, so thank you. It’s been an honor to work with all of you.

the 6 ‘R’s of sustainable packaging

Sustainable packaging has become the new breakthrough consumer issue. A recent report from Pike Research predicts eco-friendly packaging revenues nearly doubling with growth projected to be 32% of the total global packaging market by 2014, up from 21% in 2009. Another study conducted by the market research firm Datamonitor showed of U.S. consumers surveyed, 49% felt that packaging design has a medium or high level of influence over their choice of food and drink products. The percentages were higher in the U.K., China and India. Increasing consumer concerns about ecological matters means sustainable packaging is no longer a fringe concern. With consumers increasingly boycotting over-packaged products, companies can no longer proceed as usual if they want to stay competitive in the current and future marketplace.

According to Datamonitor, all consumer packaged goods companies should evaluate their packaging to align with this emerging trend. But updating your packaging can also be a win-win situation for consumers, producers and the environment. It can be a more credible way to make cost savings vs. methods such as “portion shrink” where a smaller amount of product is sold for the same price.

When updating your packaging, consider the 6 ‘R’s of environmentally friendly package design:

  Refill

1. Refill

The Envirometal cosmetic system from Aveda features refillable cases made from recycled materials.

  Reduce

  2. Reduce

Amazon.com has introduced “Frustration Free Packaging.” This program not only saves the sanity of many a parent, it also keeps excess packaging materials such as plastic coated wires, molded styrene and the dreaded clamshell package from being needed in the first place.

  Recycle   3. Recycle

This package for General Electric high-end light bulbs uses recycled materials and features a cleanly organized label that eliminates the need to print over the entire package.

packaging awards!

For over 40 years, Graphic Design USA magazine has spotlighted excellence through national design competitions. Their American Package Design Award recognizes packaging, POP and instore graphics as the “difference makers” in the success of a brand. Fewer than 10% of all firms entering will receive recognition. We are extremely proud to receive 10 American Package Design Awards for 2010.

  Haiti Relief Auction helping haiti

On February 3, Leibold Associates hosted a relief auction to assist the people of Haiti following the recent earthquake. Both a silent and live auction were held, with Chad Fulwiler as auctioneer. All auctioned items were donated, hand-made or baked by Leibold staff; a cheesecake, a Valentine cookie basket and several limited edition prints were part of the live auction, all created by our staff. Clients who attended generously placed their bids. A Happy Hour followed, with beverages and snacks, and a good time was had by all. Over $800 was raised and donated to the Neenah-Menasha Red Cross.
