| top ten 2012 marketing trends Our crystal ball is a little hazy, but there are definitely some marketing trends emerging for the upcoming year. You'll need to be leveraging all these trends and opportunities because your competitors will be trying to do the same. 1. Packaging gets more personal. Bud Light® recently introduced a write-on label onto which users can write a name, number or message to a newfound bar friend. Mars®' M&M's® Candies, which has offered custom-printed candies since 2005, now offers customized packaging. Nestlé Waters®' Ice Mountain® water features a new write-on label. For better or worse, packaging goes social. 2. Mobile location-based marketing grows. One-third of all American adults are now using smartphones, and in markets such as shopping, dining, and travel, purchases will frequently be made from a mobile device. Marketers in 2012 will have to consider mobile in their tactics as adoption of mobile smart devices becomes increasingly universal. | ||

3. Inbound marketing becomes just another tactic. Savvy marketers know that customers and prospects get information from a variety of sources: colleagues, on-line catalogs, industry newsletters, supplier web sites, webinars, social media, specialized search engines and many others. Using inbound and outbound channels in your marketing mix will connect with more prospects. 4. The digital landscape continues to evolve. There was significant merger-and-acquisition activity this year. Microsoft acquired Skype, Google grabbed Motorola Mobility, HP made moves to acquire Autonomy and Vertica, and the merger of AT&T and T-Mobile is still in the works. Where this all leads is not easily determined, but change and consolidation are on track to grow faster. 5. Daily deals go dry. Some people believe that the flagging economy and consumers' income woes will increase daily deal growth. However, there is evidence that coupons and mobile marketing through social channels, in a highly targeted way, can be done by businesses themselves at a lower cost. Groupon shares have already fallen below their IPO price. read the rest of the marketing trend predictions here |
